Say "Yes, and" see where you go

In 2010, I started improv classes as a way to improve my communication skills. Since then, in addition to regularly performing, I have taught improv performance and applied improvisation to students ages 8-80.

Improvisation dates back to the late 1930s with Viola Spolin and that's where I get a lot of my inspiration from her story. Spolin was serving as a drama supervisor for the Works Progress Administration in Chicago, and in her role, she had to help connect through cultural and ethnic barriers of the immigrant children she worked with.  She created a drama program that used acting exercises or theater "games" (what we know now as improv games) that unleashed creativity, adapting focused "play" to unlock the child's capacity for creative self-expression.

I believe that games and story-telling are not only wonderful tools for creative expression in both children and adults, they can also lead to self-discovery and personal growth. With the current pandemic, I am performing and coaching improv in an online capacity.
